The Lilac Apocalypse: Anger, Passion and Pathos
Art historian Michael Howard places Chagall’s crucifixion paintings in context with other crucifixion scenes by artists ranging from Michelangelo to Francis Bacon.
Manchester Art Gallery is collaborating with Manchester Jewish Museum and Tate Liverpool on a series of events that focus on Jewish artists. Many of the foreign artists who flocked to Paris in the early decades of the 20th century were Jews from Russia and Eastern Europe.
As part of a programme accompanying the exhibitions Chagall, Soutine & the School of Paris at Manchester Jewish Museum and Chagall: Modern Master at Tate Liverpool, Monica Bohm-Duchen is giving a lecture that will set this remarkable phenomenon in its broader social, political and artistic context. Monica will also be signing copies of her publications on Chagall.
This is also an opportunity to link to the paintings by Jewish artists in the collections of Manchester Art Gallery.
