The launch of our third Residency Book - a 90-page exploration of Alton Towers, and its relationship with the surrounding landscape...

North Stafford Hotel

Alton Towers is the oldest theme park in the UK, situated on the border of the village of Alton in the middle of the Staffordshire countryside. The resort encompasses the park itself, a waterpark, two hotels, an “extraordinary” golf course and a range of peripheral attractions. At the centre of the complex stands the neglected remains of a once-magnificent stately home, which has fallen into disprepair even as the modern park has developed around it.In April 2019 - with the support of a grant from <a href="http://artscouncil.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arts Council England</a> - we embedded seven writers in the theme park for seventy-two hours. They explored the abandoned relics in the Gardens, went on a vision quest, and stayed in a very strange, very disorientating hotel.Their collected photographs, stories, impressions, and other ephemera have been put together to form our third Residency Book, which we'll be launching on Saturday 5th October 2019 at the North Stafford Hotel in Stoke-on-Trent.Come along for a multimedia experience including live readings, samples, photographs, an interactive tour, and a brief informal history of the park. Wine will be provided, and you'll be able to purchase other drinks from the bar... not to mention signed copies of the Residency Book. Do stick around after the readings are over to chat about Alton Towers and meet the writers.This is a completely free event, but please do book a ticket so that we can keep track of numbers.
