Description

The Literacy Gap – Know it, Mind it, Close it

Keynote Speaker: Michael de Souza, author and creator of Rastamouse

Ticket price includes all resources, tea and coffee, lunch and a goodie bag

Almost 200,000 children leave primary school in England every year unable to read and write properly. The Children’s Literacy Charity tackles this by offering high quality, one-to one literacy tuition for children and young people living in disadvantaged areas. Since 1992 we have helped over 10,000 children, achieving a clear impact of which we are immensely proud: last year, of the children we supported, 92% narrowed their reading gap and 50% closed their reading gap fully against their chronological ages.

In celebration of our 25th year, our first national conference ‘The Literacy Gap – Know it, Mind it, Close it’ will bring together like-minded colleagues and esteemed speakers to share their experience, best practice and ideas to help change the effects of underachievement and social exclusion through literacy.

Aimed at primary and secondary schools, teachers, teaching assistants, tutors, head teachers, SENCOs, youth groups and community projects, other charities and interested organisations, as well as parents and carers, each delegate will benefit from:

  • A clear understanding of why the literacy gap exists

  • Practical ideas and strategies on how to unlock the potential of children who struggle to read and write

  • Inspiring stories and talks from authors, academics and education policy makers

  • An opportunity to network, building relationships and partnerships in order to close the literacy gap

FAQs

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The conference will take place at Birkbeck University's main building on Torrington Square in Bloomsbury, central London marked '1' on the local area map. You may download and print a copy of the map here.

Birkbeck's main building is surrounded by tube and mainline rail stations. Many bus routes pass down nearby Gower Street or go via Russell Square. To plan your journey to Birkbeck using public transport, see the Transport for London journey planner.

We do not advise delegates to travel by car due to the congestion charges, and because the central London location also means that parking facilities are not only limited but may be expensive.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

If you have any further questions, please email us directly at closethegap18@theclc.org.uk.

What's the refund policy?
