Event description

Description

From the 16th to the late 19th century, highly skilled singers known as castrati could be found in choirs and on opera stages throughout Western Europe. For over 300 years castrati were part of the European cultural consciousness, and could attain incredible fame and social mobility, but little is known about who they actually were as people.

The Little Knife is an in-progress novel being written by Helen McClory and Camilla Grudova, that centres on the castrati and the people who loved them. A novel in three tales, The Little Knife speculates about the psyche and consciousness of the castrato and contemplates the castrati's unique history and socioeconomic position.

Join our writer in residence Eris Young, Camilla and Helen for a candlelit evening of castrati music, readings from the novel and a chaired discussion on gender, sex, writing, and finding the strange in historical research.
