What’s happening?

The second London Freedom Walk takes place on Saturday, May 11, at 12.30pm.

It sets off from All Hallows by the Tower Church, in Byward Street...follows a family-friendly five-mile route...calls in at some of the city’s churches, where walkers will discover their history and the stories behind the work they do.

The walk will start at All Hallows by the Tower, with a short send-off service led by The Rev'd Jen Midgley-Adam, and end at St Paul’s Cathedral, in time for the 5pm Evensong.

Why are you doing this?

The event marks the start of Christian Aid Week 2024, which raises money to support communities working to tackle the challenges of poverty and the climate crisis.

Every year, the charity’s supporters around the country have seven days and so many ways to help make a difference, and walkers in London are doing their bit by stepping out around the capital.

What is Christian Aid Week all about this year?

This year the Christian Aid Week appeal is focussing on the work of the organisation’s partners in Burundi, one of the most densely populated countries in Africa.

Heavily reliant on agriculture, it’s also one of the least prepared to combat the effects of climate change, including droughts, floods and landslides.

The global cost of living crisis has intensified the challenges with more than 70 per cent of the population living in poverty and more than half of children chronically malnourished.

Christian Aid has been working in Burundi since 1995 when it first offered humanitarian assistance to people surviving the civil conflict.

Now, alongside local partners, the organisation helps establish Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs). These community-led groups mean people can save and borrow money, making small businesses possible, offering reliable and diverse incomes so families can eat regularly, get medicine when they need it, and build safer homes.

How do people get involved?

Anyone wanting to take part can sign up by going to the Christian Aid website - www.christianaid.org.uk – and search for Get Involved then Fundraising and Events.

What is different about Christian Aid?

Christian Aid Week is a key moment in the charity’s calendar when supporters and churches throughout the UK and Ireland stand in solidarity with their global neighbours. It’s the country’s longest running charity week, having been established in the 1950s.

Christian Aid works with people of all faiths and none.

The organisation works through local partners who are best placed to know what kind of support will work best in order for communities to tackle the challenges they face.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to turn up on the day without registering?

Yes, but we strongly encourage people to register before the event.

Can money collected for the walk be paid in to our church's e-envelope, as the payment methods lin

You can pay with the e-envelop (fundraise.christianaid.org.uk/envelope-2024/london-freedom-walk-24). This is the easiest and best way to pay. But if you wish to pay through your church e-envelop or any other payment method, please make sure you mention ‘Freedom Walk’ at the time of payment.

Do we need to register everyone who takes part on the Eventbrite sign up or can I sign up a group?

Please register everyone in the group so that they received the relevant information from us. But you can register a group and book as many as the ticket you wish with one registration. Please email us (richard@rjsmart.com) if you have further questions.

It looks as if there are only two toilet stops marked – where else will there be toilets, especial?

There are plenty of cafés and restaurants on the routes. We have just highlighted a few public toilets. But if you know any public toilets on the route, please let us know and we will add them to the map.

Will there be information and activities for children at the churches?

There will be some information at the churches and Church watchers will help direct people round the church and to the next point on route. Children will be very welcome and all 4 to 11 will receive a comic and there will be a fun I- Spy competition.

How will people know where to walk? Will there be maps/signs to show the way?

You should have received a Google map for the walk route. But there will be some physical map on the day.
