Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee are kindred spirits who first crossed paths on the banks of the Mississippi while touring the Midwest festival circuit. Born and raised in Arkansas, Winter was drawn to the evergreens of the Pacific Northwest and the vibrant music scene of Olympia, Washington, where she released solo albums on indie label K Records and performed in both ramblin’ folk and anarchic punk bands. In 2013, she serendipitously met Palmer T. Lee, who had built his first banjo at 19 from inherited pieces and honed his craft fronting Minneapolis string bands. Together, they formed The Lowest Pair, spending the past decade performing thousands of shows across North America and the UK and releasing seven albums.
After releasing solo albums on Conor Oberst’s Team Love Records in 2018, Winter and Lee began work on their first studio album as a duo, The Perfect Plan. As songwriters, they draw inspiration from poems, people, ideas, and experiences, constantly pushing their creative boundaries. Producer Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes guided them at ARC Studios in Omaha, Nebraska, crafting a soundscape with a slate of session musicians that elevates their music from simple folk to spirited Americana and beyond. Clawhammer banjo and acoustic guitar remain at the heart of their sound, but The Perfect Plan also channels Winter’s punk roots and adventurous musical imagination, marking a bold new chapter in their journey.
Their latest album, Horse Camp, is a collaboration with instrumental duo Small Town Therapy—Adam Roszkiewicz and Leif Karlstrom of Front Country. Born during pandemic lockdowns around campfires, these songs capture both intimacy and an epic sweep. On occasion, The Lowest Pair have toured as a four-piece, featuring Small Town Therapy as their backing band. The record was produced by Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, Charlie Parr), further expanding their rich, emotive Americana sound.
