About this Event

The Ludlow Castle Heraldic Roll

During the 16th century Ludlow castle was home to the Council in the Marches of Wales, a form of devolved government with a number of important legal and administrative responsibilities. For 26 years the Lord President of the Council was Sir Henry Sidney KG and in 1574 he arranged for the coats of arms of 46 people associated with the castle and its history to be placed in the round chapel in the castle. Over the years, more shields were added and, in the 18th century, they were recorded by William Mytton. These coats of arms have all subsequently disappeared.

What no one realised is that Sir Henry Sidney had the original coats of arms copied onto a roll of parchment and, in 2015, this roll was discovered. It contains the arms of nine Lord Presidents and all 22 members of the Council appointed in 1570. It also includes the arms of eleven previous owners of the castle, starting with Walter de Lacy in 1085 and including Roger Mortimer, 1st Earl of March, Edmund Mortimer 3rd Earl of March, Richard 3rd Duke of York and his son king Edward IV.

A successful appeal was launched to acquire the roll, and grants and donations came from many organisations and individuals, including members of the Mortimer History Society around the world. The roll has now been expertly conserved and several superb paper facsimiles have been made, one of which is taken into primary schools as part of the MHS Local History in Schools Programme. Pigment analysis has been undertaken and also research into both the scribe and the painter of the roll.

The members of the small project team are all members of MHS - Rosalind Caird, John Cherry, Philip Hume and Hugh Wood - and between them they've researched all the people on the roll and their heraldry. In September a book about the roll is being published which sets the roll within its Tudor context and this special joint conference with the Friends of Ludlow Museum sets out to tell its story.
