About the Lullaby Project

Created by artists Esther Rose Parkes and Susanne Kudielka, the Lullaby Project began by collecting lullabies from across Jersey — forming a "Lullaby Portrait" of the island. This first phase included community workshops supporting people in writing their own lullabies, lullaby singing events and sharing the collected lullabies through sound installations at events such as Children’s Day, the Festival of Words, and Scoop Summer Fayre.

With nearly 70 lullabies collected in 17 languages, the second phase commissioned six musicians to create choral arrangements based on the lullabies in the archive — many of them original lullabies written by members of the community. The resulting repertoire features songs in Dutch, Urdu, Māori, Jèrriais, Ukrainian, and English, reflecting the diverse voices and cultural backgrounds of Jersey’s residents.

In the third phase, a choir was formed and rehearsed from September to December 2024, culminating in four public performances and professional recordings. What began as a time-limited project has grown into something much more lasting. The Lullaby Choir has blossomed into a close-knit group and has just received one year of funding from the Jersey Community Foundation from September 2025, ensuring its continuation as a living archive of lullabies.
