Event description
Join award winning Blue Badge Guide Fiona Lukas to discover the secrets, the art of running the oldest underground railway in the world.

About this event

Art, Architecture and Design on the London Underground.

When trains first started running beneath the streets of Victorian London they were big, smoky and gaslit. They were also fast, cheap and very popular. Nowadays it's still fast, it's clean, not so cheap and in normal times used over three million times a day. London is shaped by, and depends on the Underground.

We'll talk about the early days and how the network developed. Then we'll "visit" various stations, and other locations. Looking for little details you may otherwise not notice, to tell a host of other stories, encompassing engineering, design, architecture and social history.

This is a virtual tour via Zoom. Tickets are £10 per person. You will receive your Zoom invitation when you book.

The roundel is one of the best known brand logos in the world. It's developed and changed gradually over the last hundred years. And continues to inspire new variations and commissioned artworks for the network. Like the floral version below found at Barbican station, celebrating their platform garden project.

Frank Pick improved the daily lives of countless Londoners, by insisting that the Underground was designed to be beautiful as well as functional. From the light fittings to the colour coding and the signage. He worked with and commissioned artists and designers and architects to realise his vision of what the network could be.

Underground stations come in various recognisable forms, built in different eras: The oxblood red tiling of Leslie Green, the suburban stations of Charles Holden and the cathedrals of the Jubilee line. A virtual tour allows us to cover more ground than we could physically. So we'll travel from central London, down the Nothern, up the Piccadilly line and across to Canary Wharf to see what makes each station special. Not forgetting the newest stations, not even open...

She's a coming! Slowly maybe, but the Crossrail/ TfL rail/ the Elizabeth Line is creeping forwards. An East West express route across London that will add much needed extra capacity to the network.
