Event description
Fellow Interintellect Suzan Bond explores the relationship between leadership and mental health.

About this Event

“No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness.” - Aristotle

"Leaders face innumerable demands, tough external conditions, loneliness, public scrutiny and pressure. Most of their lofty goals require long hours and unwavering devotion, it's no wonder mental health challenges beckon. Some argue that mental health issues like depression, anxiety, narcissism and even manic depression can be beneficial, especially during times of crisis.

Historians and psychologists have long asked whether great leaders need to be a little mad or if leadership contributes to madness. In this salon we'll explore the link between sanity and leadership. Why so many leaders seem to have extreme personalities, whether being psychologically unbalanced is a strength or a hindrance and if high levels of responsibility create mental health issues like burnout and depression.

We'll look at all types of leaders from the appointed, elected, sovereign and startup founders through a lens of mental health asking questions like:

When is taking extreme risks a sign of smart leadership and when a sign of mental health issues? Why do some leaders attract sycophants or fanboys? Does the leader's own well-being have anything to do with the followers they attract? Can being in charge turn a healthy ego into full blown narcissism or was being a narcissist the reason they were attracted to the role? Is winning at all costs just how you play the game or does it indicate mental illness?" - Salon Host Suzan Bond
