Event description

Description

This exciting workshop is spread over two weeknds in order to give to give the full monty of experience!

On Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd June we discover the...

The Magic of Handbuilding - which explores handbuilding techniques which can be developed further to create pieces suitable for Obvara firings. Covering a range of different approaches to making which incorporate texture into the making process as well as being applied to the surface after the piece is built.

What You'll Learn...

  • We will learn a range of handbuilding techniques, including Kurinuki (a Japanese term relating to a particular hand-forming process), to create pots which have a textured surface. Textured surfaces are especially interesting as they are enhanced by the effects of the Obvara firing.

  • We will be using carved stamps to create pattern in the surface of the clay before we explore different ways of stretching the clay to form the piece.

  • We will explore making personal stamps for pattern and texture making.

  • We will experiment with using found materials for pattern and texture making, using objects from the natural world alongside vintage textiles.

  • We will try our hand at surface treatments such as water etching, carving & fluting.

  • We will make a series of pieces, which will be suitable for the Obvara firing in July.

And of course plenty of tea and cake and a delicious organic lunch both days – All materials provided

Your pieces will be fired and ready for you on...

Saturday 13th July as the excitement takes us to new heights as we get stuck into the...

Obvara Firing Day, also known as Sourdough firing and is an ancient tradition from the Baltic. Sometimes also referred to as Baltic Raku. We will see the pots transformed by being bathed in the Obvara mixture while they are red hot, and watch as a palette of natural colours race across their surface before being quenched in water to fix them in place.

Over the weekend you will –

  • You will learn about the development of the firing process and how to achieve it in your own kiln. We will heat the pre made pots in a Raku kiln before carefully immersing them in the Obvara mixture. We will then quench them in the water bath to fix the surface effect.

  • We will discuss how to create your own sourdough mixture and the technical considerations for this type of firing.

  • We will fire 3 different kilns during the day and there will be many opportunities for applying the learning from one firing to the next.

And yes more tea, cake and a delicious organic lunch will be provided

Please note that the firing day is held at a different venue in Staverton - 10 minutes from Studio 45

These workshops are also available to do on individual days please click the links below to book separately...
