For the past two decades Professor Peter Gatrell has been a pioneering scholar in the global history of refugees and population displacement culminating in his recent book The Making of the Modern Refugee (Oxford University Press, 2013). Surveying refugee movements across the twentieth century, the book has been praised for putting "displaced people at the heart of contemporary history".
