About this event

Community • Heritage

Organized in collaboration with the Manchester Digital Music Archive and MMU's Music and Sonic Studies Manchester research group, this Manchester Urban Film Series screening and discussion will focus on highlighting the less well known side of Manchester’s music history, how it's shaped the city and its enduring significance and forms today.

We’ll be screening a clip from the 1992 Granada TV documentary, The Mancunian Way: Music and Regeneration, which provides a unique snapshot into the construction and historical context of Manchester's iconic music scene. We'll then also consider an alternative perspective in screening recent footage of interviews conducted as part of the Suffragette City project hearing from women who have been central but often overlooked withi Manchester's official music history.

Following these film clips, we'll have an open discussion led by Markus Hetheier to share reflections on what histories get remembered, the connection between music and the city, and what's changed, as well as ongoing and current DIY and alternative music initiatives today.

Markus Hetheier is an electronic musician and researcher. In his electronic music project Industries he explores and subverts musical structures and ranges from field recordings, distorted sounds to harmonic melodies and large beats. He co-runs the queer electronica night FLUFF which recently received funding through Factory International’s Factory Sounds programme. Besides being an electronic musician, he is also undertaking a practice-based PhD at the School of Digital Arts (SODA) investigating Manchester’s queer sonics. www.industriesmcr.com @industriesmcr #industriesmcr
