The Meaning of 'Race': Theories, Histories and Context
From Grenfell, the Coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement: Britain is confronting its relationship to 'race', racism and racial inequalities in unprecedented ways. But what is 'race'? How and why did it emerge? What are the social and political forces that have shaped them? While discussions of 'race', racism and racial inequalities have been subject to much debate amongst academics; the British public remains divided in regards to its meaning and history.
Wales Against Racism has invited Dr Steve Garner of Cardiff University to deliver a virtual seminar on the theory and history of 'race'. This seminar will introduce the key theoretical debates and approaches to the study of 'race', the historical development and emergence of modern ideas of 'race' and its relationship to capitalism, slavery and modernity.
This virtual event is co-organised and moderated by: Umalkhaire Goran, MA Education graduate student at UCL and Hoda AlShaibani, Journalism student at Cardiff University.
This event is part of Wales Against Racisms' Black History Month Online Seminar Series.
WALES AGAINST RACISM is a student-led anti-racist platform.
