The Memory Café: Horrible Halifax – with Local Historian David Glover

Join us at The Memory Café for a fascinating (and often shocking!) dive into Halifax’s darker, quirkier past with renowned local historian David Glover.

From scandalous vicars to strange customs, David will bring to life some of the most curious stories from our town’s history:

  • Which vicar of Halifax assaulted his own constable?
  • Who labelled “bastards” with a large B in his register?
  • Who sold his wife at Halifax Cross?
  • Where did the drunken gravedigger sleep?
  • When were pigs kept in The Piece Hall?

Discover tales of Quakers, tatch-beggars, and even a youth trafficked into white slavery — all true and all part of Halifax’s vivid heritage.

Enjoy refreshments and cake as you sit back for an afternoon of history, humour, and community connection.
