The Memory Café: Lost Markets and Shops of Halifax – with Local Historian David Glover

Step back in time with local historian David Glover as he takes us on a fascinating journey through Halifax’s lost markets and much-loved shops of the past.

Starting with the days when goods were sold outdoors in the Old Market, David will guide us through the story of Halifax’s Borough Market (1896) — a true local treasure that still stands proudly today. From there, we’ll explore some of the town’s long-lost shops and businesses that once lined our streets — perhaps you remember Modelle, Hind’s, or Fred Wade? Or even Lipton’s, Eagland Bray’s Groceries, Simpsons Furnishing Store, and Alexander Scott’s Drapery?

With plenty of nostalgic photographs and local memories, this talk is sure to bring back warm recollections of Halifax’s bustling shopping days gone by.

☕ Enjoy coffee, cake, and friendly conversation as part of our welcoming Memory Café series — a place to connect, reminisce, and celebrate our shared local heritage.
