WHAT IS HELP FOR HEROES?

Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded Servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The message of the charity is simple: We are strictly non political and non critical; we simply want to help.

We believe that anyone who volunteers to serve in time of war, knowing that they may risk all, is a hero. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things and some of them are living with the consequences of their service for life.

We may not be able to prevent our soldiers from being wounded, but together we can help them get better.

WHAT DO HELP FOR HEROES DO?

Help for Heroes raises money to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country. We ask our supporters to “do their bit” to show these extraordinary young men and women that they are cared for by us.

Over a million people have responded to date and millions of pounds have been raised to buy much needed services that will aid their recovery, but we need more!

So far, we have allocated almost all of the money we have raised in order to fund direct projects and support other service charities. We are passionate about what we are doing and as far as we are concerned the sooner we can see results, the better!

WHAT IF I JUST WANT TO DONATE TO THE EVENT RATHER THAN TAKE PART?

If you would like to donate in support of the Military Fitness Challenge then just follow the link.

WHAT WILL I DO IN THE CLASS?

Each class will last for one hour and will consist of a warm up, main theme and cool down. The main theme of each class will vary from session to session, so make sure that you sign up for the class or classes that you think would most interest you.

What you can be sure of is that each class will be fun and offers an excellent form of tried and tested fitness training. All participants will exercise together as a group and will carry out either individual, partner or team exercises as demonstrated and explained by the event fitness Instructors.

As a lot of the exercise will be carried out in pairs it may be an idea to bring a friend along who you would like to exercise with!! Although this is not essential as partners will often be asked to swap around during the session anyway.

WHO WILL BE TAKING ME ON THE CLASS?

Each activity will involve the partcipants receiving instruction and coaching on fitness training from either ex or serving military Physical Training Instructors (PTIs); some of which are members of the elite Royal Army Physical Training Corps (RAPTC).

Some of the PTIs are also actively teaching members of the public in the civilian fitness industry and are well qualified in this area.

WHO CAN TAKE PART?

The Military fitness Challenge is open to enthusiastic people of all fitness levels (over 18s). You can sign up for one session or for as many sessions as you think you can manage.

For those that enjoy the ultimate challenge sign up for the Ultimate challenge ticket on the registration page.

HOW PHYSICALLY FIT DO I HAVE TO BE TO TAKE PART?

The Military Fitness Challenge is aimed at all fitness abilities including those people that are new to or returning to fitness after a long absence. We simply ask that you exercise at your own level during the class and rest as appropriate.

All participants will be asked to fill out a PARQ form which you can download and need to bring along on the day when you register.

WHAT CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT  DO I HAVE TO WEAR OR BRING TO THE EVENT?

Any suitable sports clothing will be acceptable. Footwear should be well cushioned with a good grip and adequate ankle support. However, participants are advised that due to the nature of some of the exercises NO jewellery is to be worn for safety reasons.

Also it is advised that long sleeves and trousers would offer more protection for ground based activities. All participants should arrive fully hydrated and carry water in a sports drinking bottle or similar to keep hydrated throughout the activity.

When choosing clothing to wear the weather should be taken into account as September could be very hot (it was in 2011) or very cold and wet.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE TAKING PART?

Initial feedback on this event has been fantastic and it has been necessary to enforce a cap on the amount of people participating.

So maximum tickets being sold for each event is 100.

There will be 25 tickets only being sold to those that wish to participate in the Ultimate challenge. This means there could be up to 125 participants taking part at each session.

WHAT IS A PARQ FORM AND WHY DO I NEED TO BRING ONE TO THE REGISTRATION?

The Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire Being physically active is very safe for most people. Some people, however, should check with their doctors before they increase their current level of activity.

The PARQ has been designed to identify the small number of adults for whom physical activity may be inappropriate or those who should have medical advice concerning the type of activity most suitable for them. If you answer YES to any of the questions then you will need a to bring a note along with your PARQ form on the day from your doctor stating that it is safe for you to carry out exercise.

All participants are to bring the signed form (your signature plus witness signature) to the registration along with their ticket.
