Event Details

3.5 million manufacturing jobs will need to be filled in the next decade, but the skills gap is expected to end up in 2 million of jobs unfilled. Manufacturing is now looking for young workers, but what millennials may not realise is that modern manufacturing has undergone a deep makeover. Analytical Textile Technologist, Digital Designer, Robotics Software Developer.  Today manufacturing is full of cutting-edge technology and seeks to make the world a better place with the creation of products we use every single day.

 

Join Dr Mariachiara Barzotto and Dr Paula Pérez-Sobrino (University of Birmingham) for this workshop in quiz format to explore the new face of manufacturing, and to find out more about how manufacturers truly design and build the future in smart factories. Two teams plus an audience will put to test their social perceptions on manual labour in the age of millennials and technology.

 

Reframing Manual Labour is an ongoing project that explores ways to reduce the mismatch between the types of skills that companies are looking for and those that are offered in the labour market in the industry 4.0.

 

This study is conducted jointly at the Birmingham Business School and the English Language and Applied Linguistics Department the University of Birmingham with the support of the European Commission (projects “SkillUP” and “Exploring Multimodal Metaphor in Advertising - EMMA”).

Dr Mariachiara Barzotto 

 

Dr. Mariachiara Barzotto is a Post-Doctoral Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the Birmingham Business School (BBS). She obtained her Ph.D. degree from Ca’ Foscari University Venice (Italy) in 2014. Her research interests and work experiences focus on international organisation of global value chains, international competitiveness, EU industrial policy and employment in advanced economies - including skill misalignments and skill development in high-income countries. Mariachiara works on research projects investigating the effects of the hollowing out of manufacturing activities on the European labour market, with a particular emphasis on the workforce skill development interventions to overcome skills shortage and imbalances.

Dr Paula Pérez-Sobrino is a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellow at the University of Birmingham.  Together with Professor Jeannette Littlemore, we run the 2-year project EMMA (Exploring Multimodal Metaphor in Advertising), with the support of the European Commission.
