Event Details

‘We are moving from a world where computing power was scarce to a place where it now is almost limitless, and where the true scarce commodity is increasingly human attention’

SATYA NADELLA , CEO OF MICROSOFT.

The role of a manager can be a demanding one. What impact does managing ourselves and others have on our minds? What do we understand of our minds and how brain friendly are we as individuals and as managers?

During this introductory workshop we will explore

  • What qualities are beneficial in the mind of a manager?

  • What helps and hinders these qualities?

  • What mindfulness is (including some of the neuroscience)

  • How a mindfulness practice might help us in managing our ourselves and others

  • Why taking an active approach to looking after our minds is essential both for our own well-being and effectiveness and that of those around us

  • Next steps for those interested in ‘Mindful Management’.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is specifically for those with management responsibilities. It is suitable for those in supervisory, management and leadership level roles and ideal for individuals looking to cultivate inner resources to manage themselves, others and the complex demands of working environments more ably.

Whilst guidance will be offered for those who would like to learn mindfulness there is no expectation to do so - sceptics welcome.

Format of the Workshop

The Workshop will begin at 2pm, concluding at 4.30pm. We recommend arriving 10 minutes early. The session will consist of a mixture of presentations, group discussion and guided meditation exercises.

Next Steps

Please don’t forget that mindfulness is a skill which takes both time and personal commitment to be learned. Whilst you may well experience a change in ‘state’ as a result of an introductory workshop, the researched benefits of mindfulness come from the regular practice of mindfulness meditation and the possibility of both increased awareness and changes in ‘trait’.

Those that would like to begin to practice mindfulness following an introductory workshop or who wish to refresh and/or deepen an existing mindfulness meditation practice are encouraged to consider, a mindfulness course, options include

  • Managing Mindfully

  • Mindfulness for Change

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

  • Mindfulness-Based Compassionate Care

Full details are available on our website.

The Facilitator

The facilitator for this course is Sally Roberts. As a self-confessed workaholic it was only in response to ill health that Sally first found herself drawn to mindfulness in 2008. Having experienced how transformational mindfulness can be on a personal level it was the potential of mindfulness in the workplace which inspired Sally to train to teach mindfulness during 2012. In the years which have followed she has had the privilege of sharing many journeys into mindfulness and continues to be inspired by the transformational impact these can have at both a personal and professional level. As a former HR Manager (MCIPD) Sally is passionate about the transformational potential of mindfulness in organisations, developing a particular interest in relation to HR teams and leadership development. Workplace examples of the centre’s work in organisations and a thought leadership piece on the role of insight in Human Resources are shared as contributory authors in Chapman-Clarke’s ‘Mindfulness in the Workplace: An Evidence-based Approach to Improving Wellbeing and Maximizing Performance’.

I am considering training to teach mindfulness, will this course enable me to do this?

For those looking to teach mindfulness we would recommend having a look at the UK Network for Mindfulness Based Teacher Training Organisations which gives guidance on good practice and teacher training organisations within the UK. An 8-week MBSR, MBCT or 10-week MBLC course is generally considered a good starting point (including attendance on a day retreat) and often a pre-requisite to attending teaching training. Given several of our courses are adaptations of the traditional 8 week format, if you are looking to follow a particular training route it is worth checking any stipulated pre-requisites with your training provider.

My organisation are interested in/supportive of mindfulness – do you offer in-house training?

Yes we offer a full range of in-house mindfulness training, including stress reduction, resilience, change management, compassionate care, creativity and leadership development. Introductory workshops are an important first step for those wishing to offer mindfulness training. Please see our workplace webpage or get in touch for further information. We have also agreed employee discounts with a number of local organisations. If you are unsure as to whether or not your organisation has this offer in place please check with your HR/Staff Benefits/Management team.
