This is a recording of a talk called The Mirror in the Bike Shed: Edwardian Ladies & their Bicycles, recorded on 10th May 2022.
M.H. Baillie Scott's remarkable bike shed at Waterlow Court in Hampstead Garden Suburb was used by the single professional ladies who were the building's residents when it was built in 1909. This talk explores the shed's unusual design and the reasons why bicycles were so important for Edwardian ladies as well as investigating the history of the building and its relationship to other bicycle spaces in the Suburb.
Anthony Davis is a postgraduate architectural history student at UCL The Bartlett. He was awarded the Mavis Batey Essay Prize by the Gardens Trust in 2021 for his work on the shed which was published in Garden History in Winter 2021. Anthony is a graduate of Oxford and London Universities and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
