ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr Deborah Brady, Lead Ecologist at The Lifescape Project

Deborah is an experienced ecologist specialising in mammals and the use of species reintroductions as a tool to address biodiversity loss at a landscape scale. As a founding Trustee and now Lead Ecologist at The Lifescape Project, she leads the charity’s species restoration work. Her career has encompassed a wide range of mammal conservation and restoration projects, from managing non-native species to contributing to multi-species initiatives involving white-tailed eagles, pine martens, and hazel dormice. Deborah manages The Missing Lynx Project, which explores the ecological, social, and practical feasibility of lynx reintroduction in England. This has included coordinating the UK’s largest-ever consultation on species reintroduction, engaging with over 10,000 consultees across the identified habitat region and demonstrating broad regional support for lynx recovery.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Missing Lynx Project is a partnership project investigating the possibility of reintroducing lynx to Britain. The project is focusing on a habitat patch in Northumberland and bordering areas of Cumbria and southern Scotland.

The project is currently exploring the ecological, practical and social feasibility of reintroducing lynx. This is basically asking three key questions. Is there an area in England where lynx could live? How could we go about bringing lynx back? And would local people accept lynx back in the landscape?

The Missing Lynx Project partnership would support a lynx reintroduction if there is both an area in Britain where lynx can live, and if local people are accepting of the animal back in the landscape.

The Missing Lynx Project partnership is working with local communities to consider how a reintroduction project could be managed to maximise benefits and reduce risks. The partnership hopes to apply for a licence to reintroduce lynx to north-west Northumberland once we have a plan that's collaboratively designed with local people which sets out measures that are acceptable, feasible and can be implemented.

We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting update event and hope to see you there!
