Event description

Description

Kneller Hall - originally named after 17C court painter Godfrey Kneller - was first established as a school of military music after the Crimean War when it was thought that the military bands of other European powers were superior to Britain's and Something Should Be Done. Since then it introduced a level of standardisation of military music by pitch, key, instruments etc. Its other important role has been as a training school for musicians, but importantly the development of band masters. It became a museum after WW2.

The museum records the history of Military music and the Royal school of Military music..Our tour will explain the use of music in battle and the ceremonial use in state events, such as Trooping the Colour and changing the guard etc.

Event begins with tea/coffee and biscuits.
