The Mythic Improv Journey (Tuesdays)
Event Information
About this Event
What is it?
It might be best to say what this isn’t! This is not an improv class, nor is it therapy. We’ll be using your existing improv skills to help you connect with yourself, the rest of the group and with the natural cycles of the year.
This is a year-long journey of discovery anchored in eight live Zoom meetings throughout 2021. Each session is part self-enquiry with solo and group prompts, some lecture/storytelling using myths and stories and around half of each session will be improvisation; using our art form to dig a little deeper and to have fun while we do.
The dates are based on the pagan Wheel of the Year and we’ll be inspired by a variety of stories from Norse, Greek, Roman, Celtic and other mythologies.
All classes are 7-9pm GMT throughout 2021:
Tuesday 2nd February, Imbolc
Tuesday 23rd March, Ostara
Tuesday 4th May, Beltane
Tuesday 22nd June, Litha
Tuesday 3rd August, Lughnasadh
Tuesday 21st September, Mabon
Tuesday 2nd November, Samhain
Tuesday 21st December, Yule
Unfortunately, this course is currently exclusive to those based in the Northern Hemisphere because we’re working with the seasons.
Who is this for?
Improvisers who would like the opportunity to revisit one group over the course of a year, who are interested in self-discovery, group connection and in being present in the natural ebb and flow of a full year. Perhaps you’ve taken a lot of classes and now you’d just like to play, or maybe you feel like it's time to experiment, using improvisation in a different way.
If you have never done longform improvisation before, I suggest you try some drop-ins and courses in improvisation and come and join us next time.
Who is leading it?
Katy Schutte is an award-winning improviser and theatre-maker and author of The Improviser’s Way: A Longform Workbook published by Nick Hern Books. She co-founded The Improv Place and performs all over the world with The Maydays, Project2, Hell Yeah! and more. She has been teaching improvisation for over 15 years.
Katy learned witchcraft in her early 20s in a Brighton-based coven. She has suffered with anxiety and depression and finds mythic self-enquiry a great way to learn and grow. She loves community and she loves improv.
The class is limited to 14 students.
