Register today for your free tickets to join us in York for the inaugural National Family Business Show.

The National Family Business Show 2019 is an ideal opportunity to find out more about the diversity of the family business sector in the UK with numerous businesses showcasing their products and services at the event.

In addition, the Insights Stage within the exhibition hall will feature a number of speakers who will share their own personal journeys and the challenges that they have addressed along the way. A diverse range of speakers will be announced for the Insights Stage in due course to share their thoughts, on the hour, every hour throughout the event.

The National Family Business Show 2019 is being opened by Julian Sturdy MP and representative of York Outer. As someone who has lived and worked in the local area all his life Julian believes that local communities should be at the heart of society and is passionate about keeping them there. He was raised locally and has farmed in the area all of his working life. He will be present to 'cut-the-ribbon' and open the show which will be a real showcase of the UK family business sector.

The Insights Stage Line Up

10.00am - Defining the UK Family Business Sector - Professor Carole Howorth

Professor Carole Howorth is Chair of Sustainable and Ethical Entrepreneurship at The York Management School. She was previously with Bradford University School of Management where she was Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business, Associate Dean for Research and in 2016 Interim Dean. Carole researches entrepreneurship in family and social contexts and chairs the Global STEP Family Enterprising Project working with 40 universities around the world to examine successful transgenerational entrepreneurship practices within large family businesses. She will be presenting an overall perspective of the family business sector in the UK today helping to dispel some of the myths surrounding the sector.

11.00am - The Creation Of A Retail Emporium - Nick Bianchi, Fourth Generation Director

Arighi Bianchi is an award-winning retail family busines success story that began in 1854 with a journey on foot from the shores of Lake Como in Northern Italy, over the Alps and across central Europe, to the silk town of Macclesfield in the North West of England. Arighi Bianchi today is a destination retail emporium run by the fourth generation and Nick Bianchi will share his insights on their joruney and evolution as a family firm.

12 noon - Seven Skills Required of Future Leaders - Ian Brierley, Fourth Generation Chairman of John L Brierley and Vistage Group Chair in Yorkshire.

The workshop will look at what are the seven key skills a successful family business leader needs, and what activities do they undertake that set them apart? How do family business owners drive growth and performance in a family business? How do leaders know how well they have performed at these key skills and how can leaders inspire teams, increase productivity and create a culture of engagement and collaboration in the business that results in loyal customers who go out of their way to offer recommendations to others? What happens when the next generation has a different skill set?

1.00pm - Frying For Four Generations - Nick and David Miller, Third & Fourth Generation Owners

Come and meet the Millers! Nick and David own and run the award winning 4th generation family run fish & chip shop located in Haxby, York and in 2018 were crowned the Small Family Business of the Year at the Family Business of the Year Awards and also took the National Fish & Chip Shop of the Year title too. Millers truly believe in making fish and chips accessible for everyone. That’s why they make sure they’re catering for allergen-free diets, halal and vegetarian lifestyles.

As a fourth-generation family business with a 77-year history, they bring the tradition of great British fish and chips and fuse it with a new, innovative approach and in doing so enable the local community in Haxby and visitors from further afield to experience their delicious, traditional fish and chips.

Millers are proud ambassadors of the British fish and chip industry and their success as a fourth generation family business so come and will be sharing their journey to date.

Furthermore, there will be plenty of space within the 'Meeting Zone' to have one-to-one meetings with the exhibitors and your own contacts who are welcome to meet you at the show too.
