Synopsis

The National Rehabilitation Centre is aiming for the first hospital in the UK to be completed under the NHS Net Zero Carbon Standard. The NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) is a pioneering facility designed to provide intense rehabilitation programmes for up to 750 patients each year, to increase their chances of returning to life and work.

At £105m, it is a 70 bed rehabilitation centre currently under construction at Stanford Hall near Loughborough by the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The NRC will welcome patients with a wide range of needs: from those recovering from complex trauma and neurological conditions, through to musculoskeletal problems and people adapting to life after amputation. The centre also benefits from its proximity to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, just 400 metres away. Some facilities will be shared, and the NRC will be able to draw on cutting-edge innovations developed through military rehabilitation, ensuring patients benefit from the very latest approaches.

The Building has been built on sustainable foundations. Targeting BREEAM Excellent and Net Zero Carbon are two large drivers, however, it also promotes a connection to nature, through its rural setting and inviting natural lighting. It is designed to immediately feels like the right kind of place to support people on their rehabilitation journey: uplifting, restorative, and built to foster recovery in every sense.

In this session, we will talk about the Net Zero Carbon brief and discuss the impact on the designers and project, throughout the project life. Come and hear from a range of disciplines and professionals, all who have been involved on the NRC project.
