Description

This study day is for healthcare professionals to develop their understanding of genetics as it becomes increasingly incorporated into routine clinical practice. It is relevant for Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, Allied Health Professionals and researchers working in a clinical setting.

Registration is at 9am.

The morning session begins at 9.15am and includes the following talks:

  • Key genetic concepts and the evolution of genetic testing (Dr Heather Pierce, Genetic Counsellor)

  • Genomics and bringing genetics into mainstream medicine (Professor Lucy Raymond, Professor of Medical Genetics and Neurodevelopment)

  • Ethical and psychosocial aspects of genetics (Dr Amy Taylor, Principal Genetic Counsellor)

A buffet lunch is provided between 12.30-1.15pm for those attending the whole day.

The afternoon workshops begin at 1.15pm. There will be three concurrent workshops, based on interactive, case-based discussion:

  • Cancer genetics workshop

To include family cancer risk assessment, new cancer genes, strategies for genetic testing, interpreting & communicating results, mainstreaming cancer genetic testing and implications for management.

  • Prenatal genetics workshop

To include invasive and non-invasive prenatal testing/diagnosis, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, prenatal arrays & incidental findings, ethical issues in prenatal genetics and post-mortem tissue sampling & storage.

  • General genetics workshop

To include making a genetic diagnosis, genetic testing in adults, genetic testing in children, interpretation of genetic & genomic variants, common genetic conditions, communicating genetic test results to families and the 100 000 Genomes Project.
