Description

The Department of Politics, Birkbeck, in collaboration with the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research Population, Environment and Resources Working Group

This panel explores the causes behind the rise of the populist right in Western Europe and North America, with reference to nationalism and immigration. Presenters, from both Europe and North America, are leading authors on the subject of nationalism, populist right politics and the politics of the white working-class in the West. This wide-ranging discussion will explore questions such as whether identity, material deprivation or political opportunity best explains the rise; the impact of immigration and ethnic change on populism; the white working-class and populism; the role of psychological authoritarianism; the emergence of a new nationalist-globalist cleavage bisecting the right-left divide in western politics; and whether right-wing populism will continue to be a force into the foreseeable future.

Speakers:

Chair: Eric Kaufmann, Birkbeck, University of London, UK
