The New River and Sir Hugh Myddelton – Islington to Canonbury
Event Information
Description
Meet by ticket barriers at Angel Station (Northern Line) at 10.30am
Finish at Highbury and Islington Station (Victoria Line and Overground) at about 12.30pm
Summary: The New River is not new nor a river! It is a channel built 1604-1613 to bring fresh drinking water from Amwell, near Hertford, to Islington, at New River Head.
We start at the New River Head, former headquarters of the New River Company and now flats. We then follow the course of the New River for a couple of delightfully landscaped miles, passing impressive villas, now homes of the great and good.
More details
We will explore the Victorian New River Company buildings at New River Head, a short walk from Angel Station. We will then follow the course of the New River, mostly in pipes in central London, through delightful Victorian landscaped parks, home of many well-known people, including Douglas ‘Hitch-Hiker’s Guide’ Adams, as far as the splendid Victorian villas of Canonbury, a short walk from Highbury Station – about 2 miles.
