The New River's Origins
The New River, built to bring fresh water to London, was officially opened in September 1613. A hand dug channel, following an intricate route nearly 40 miles long, brought water from Hertfordshire to Islington and on to homes and businesses in London. It was hailed as the greatest work of civil engineering since Roman times.
Over 400 years later and the New River is still supplying London with 8% of its fresh water, 38 million gallons a day!
On this walk we will trace the first few miles of the original orignal route, learn how the New River was built and how it has adapted, stroll through some beautiful countryside, meet some extraordinary characters, visit the historic country town of Ware and finish near St Margaret's Station for services to Liverpool Street (just 42 minutes). En route we will refresh ourselves in three fine country pubs.
The walk will take approximately 4 hours
The walk starts at Hertford East Station and ends at St Margaret's Station for services to Liverpool Street, or Tottenham Hale or Seven Sisters for a change onto the Victoria Line.
The walk is not suitable for under 18s on account of the pub stops.
The walk is not readily accessible for many, the path can be muddy, gates can be awkward and there are some inclines, kerbs and narrow pavements, please contact me if you want to talk in more detail about accessibility.
When & Where
Discovering London with Peter Berthoud
I am an award winning, fully qualified and fully insured City of Westminster Guide and a member of the City of Westminster Guide Lecturers Association.
My tours are informative, fun, flexible and inclusive. I offer some public walks (such as this one) but the majority of my time is spent writing and delivering personalised tours, for families, companies and educational organisations.
My walks are all available for booking by private groups or individuals. I can tailor any tour to your requirements, make them shorter, longer, include pub stops or finish near a restaurant in the area for example.
The shortest bookings I generally accept are for one hour, the longest for one week.
I can help you to plan tours in minute detail weeks beforehand or I love nothing more than working with a brand new group, on the day itself, to develop a truly unique and spontaneous tour!
