The University of Edinburgh is delighted to be hosting a lecture by Dr. Kathy Sullivan, renowned oceanographer and former NASA astronaut, on Wednesday 2 April 2025, to celebrate the work that we do across the University in space.

Dr. Kathy Sullivan is the first American woman to walk in space for NASA and is a veteran of three shuttle missions. She also made history by becoming the first woman to visit the deepest spot in the oceans, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, in June 2020. Dr. Sullivan marked the occasion by making a phone call from the submersible’s mothership, DSSV Pressure Drop, to speak with the NASA astronauts on the International Space Station.

Dr. Sullivan’s lecture, “The New Space Age” will focus on the many actors who are active on the space frontier today, and the visions, goals, and hurdles that will shape the space enterprise in the years ahead.

The lecture will take place from 5.30pm – 6.30pm on Wednesday 2 April. There will be opportunity for Dr. Sullivan to answer questions from the audience.
