About this event
'An Evening with Rumi was a brilliant piece of artwork. A masterpiece. And this is an understatement.'~ Harriet Rodrigues
A night of remembrance, where poetry, music, and silence open the heart to love’s eternal light.
Join us this December for String of Pearls Ensemble’s next event, a luminous commemoration of Seb-i Arus—Rumi’s 'Wedding Night' the sacred moment of his passing and union with the Divine. In these times of deep conflict and suffering, we gather to be reminded of his eternal call to love, unity, and peace. Through poetry, music, and movement, Rumi’s words become living lanterns, guiding us back to the stillness of the heart.
The performance will trace the journey of Rumi’s life—from his early years as a scholar and teacher, through his meeting with Shams of Tabriz, to his profound spiritual awakening—illuminating the experiences that shaped his poetry and teachings of love, devotion, and unity.
The evening unfolds with voices and souls in harmony: Duncan Mackintosh (storyteller), Leela Emadi (Persian song), Kaveh Khamooshi (tanbur), Zahra Afsah (Persian storyteller), Laura Merri (English poetry) and Anna Ruya Ayyildiz (Sufi whirler). Together they weave languages and cultures in an atmosphere of devotion.
All are welcome to share in this night of unity, reflection, and the radiant spirit of Rumi, in the beautiful Marylebone Theatre at Steiner House.
Alongside the performance, guests can enjoy handmade treasures and flavors of the East. Cherry will offer her hand-crafted jewelry, Manvir will share beautiful scarves and shawls, and there will be chai, Persian snacks, and art for purchase—adding to the spirit of beauty, sharing, and community.

Before the evening event, there is a unique afternoon workshop being offered and facilitated by Duncan Mackintosh in the Lecture Room at the same venue as the evening event, Steiner House. You can buy a ticket for the workshop separately or a combined ticket for the workshop and evening event.
'This that we are Now' Exploring the Mystery of Presence with Rumi
offered by Duncan Mackintosh
‘We are the mirror as well as the face in it
We are tasting the taste this instant of Eternity
We are pain and what cures pain both
We are the sweet cold waterAnd the jar the pours’
-Rumi
In this workshop, we will focus on contacting the pervading field of Presence -the formless ground and loving intelligence that is our source, our being, and the agent of our transformation.
Together we will create a welcoming crucible in which we can deepen our experience through simple practice.
