Professor Roy Fisher :   Inaugural Professorial Lecture

'The noblest calling...': (yet) another look at teacher education

Teaching is widely recognised as an important activity, vital to the economy, central to the general well-being of society, and crucial in the realisation of individual potential. It is seen as an implicitly altruistic and nurturing activity, despite being (largely) based on a presumption of ‘privileged’ knowledge. Yet the profession has an ambivalent status and conflicting identities arising from its role and its place in occupational hierarchies. The history of teacher education in England reflects these problems and contradictions. This lecture will consider some of the characteristics of teacher education from its inception to more recent times, including aspects of the nature of pedagogy, the structures and institutions which have provided a context for the training of teachers, factors arising from gender and class, and the relationship of teacher education to the university. Some of the above issues will be discussed through the consideration of developments local to Huddersfield.

Timings for the evening are:

Drinks reception:    17:30                Inaugural Lecture:  18:15
