Event description

Description

Do you have an idea for an app or a web business, but don’t have the technical skills to build it? The good news is that you don’t have to learn how to build the product yourself, but you do have to hire the people to do it and ask them the right questions.

Even knowing where to begin can be a dauting task, with thousands of courses about learning to code or product management. While those are useful skills, if you are starting from scratch, you need an overview of all the skills you will need, rather than a deep dive into one discipline. As founder your job is to manage and motivate the technical team, not write code yourself.

This 90 minute session will give an introduction of what you need to know to effectively work in a tech based business:

  • Difference between back end and front-end development
  • User experience design and UX testing
  • How to hire and work with developers
  • Intro to product management
  • Introduction to data science and analytics

You will also get suggestions for the most useful resources if you want to delve into a particular discipline.

The instructor’s story:

When I left Chicago Booth, a business school consistently ranked as the global number 1 by Bloomberg and Business Week, I had a top tier MBA and great marketing skills, but had no idea about tech. In my journey of founding and building Enty into a global company, with an app, a website, an analytics panel and its own unique machine learning algorithm, I have had to delve into a world with its own jargon, concepts and tribes.

The start was overwhelmingly confusing. How do you begin learning, if you don’t even know what you don’t know? I took online courses, read books, learnt some coding, spoke to developers, product managers, data scientists and analysts and finally came up with a system to evaluate what I need to learn, and what I don’t. I then wrote a Forbes article about it, which led to approaches by countless founders and organizations asking me to teach them how to get a tech overview from scratch.

These questions led me to put together this course, to prevent founders from making the same mistakes I did and learning skills they don’t really need. Founding a company is stressful enough, but if you know how to ask the right questions and hire the right people, your chances of successfully getting your tech product out on time and on budget increase dramatically.

This course is great for:

  • Entrepreneurs who want to build technology products but do not have technical backgrounds
  • Non-technical professionals working in tech companies
  • Business school students who want to supplement their business knowledge
  • Professionals wanting to transition to the fast-growing technology sector

About the instructor:

This course is taught by Sophia Matveeva, CEO & Co-Founder of Enty, a fashion tech platform. Sophia is a regular contributor to Forbes, and has been featured in the Financial Times, CNBC, Inc, Wal Street Journal, BBC, The Guardian and more. She is a regular speaker on entrepreneurship, how technology is reshaping retail, and women in tech.
