Description

We're excited for this quarter's Oblique Film Club! As you know from some of our previous posts, this month's Oblique Life theme is 'Mother Nature'. This Film Club's selection of films will therefore explore the ways that today's new and upcoming filmmakers are dealing with the theme of Mother Nature.

Where Climate Change and global warming have become constants in the news, its difficult to ignore the pressures that we are putting on or world. Whilst active protests are one important medium of expression, art is another. That's why we are dedicating a night to pre-viewing films that show us different interpretations of our theme Mother Nature. They say that pictures can speak a thousand words, but perhaps films can speak even more.

We are also very excited to announce that this month's Film Club is also being sponsored by Joey Koala a British, sustainable brand that manufactures gourmet popcorn & caramel using their secret Family recipe, only using the finest natural ingredients!

The Films:

Kofi and Lartey (Harriette Wright): This film, set in an electronic waste dump, tells the stories of Kofi and Lartey who dream of life beyond such industrial and toxic danger.

The Natural Habitat (Maya Avidov): This Short film, commissioned by the British Library Sound Archive, explores and promotes their wildlife sound catalogue.

Side by Side (Alessana Inez): This film gives insight into different perceptions of nature and norms as it follows the friendship between two English and Pakistani girls and societies' objections to it.

Homecoming (Sarah Begum): This film covers Ghana’s Nmayem Festival where the Manya Tribe celebrate harvest and mark the date that the British occupied their hilltop homes.

Eunice (Zac Gammiere): Set in New York, 1856, Eunice is based on Eunice Newton Foote’s life as a self-taught scientist who discovered greenhouse gases’s effects on the environment.

Tall Tales (Like Ainger): Tall Tales is a dark comedy about a father tree telling his son that he will live a short and bleak life due to humans’ ill-treatment of trees.

A Voice Above Nature (Annie Moir): A Voice Above Nature explores the effects of noise pollution on our most powerful marine animals as told by a whale guide, biologist and captain.
