How can we break our addiction to oil? Can our banks sustainably support a transition of the economy as they divest and invest in new energy? Is decarbonisation an ideal we simply cannot afford? Or can humanity even afford not to decarbonise?

In the shadow of the COP 28 World Climate Summit taking place in the UAE until December 12th, there is no better time for these discussions about our complex (and harmful) dependence on fossil fuels and no better time for watching the compelling, award-winning new documentary film The Oil Machine.

The Oil Machine explores our economic, historical, and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil & gas. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil?

The film brings together a wide range of voices from oil company executives, economists, young activists, oil workers, pension fund managers, and considers how this machine can be tamed, dismantled or repurposed. We have five to ten years to control our oil addiction, and yet the licensing of new oil fields continues in direct contradiction with the Paris Climate Agreement.
