At our new monthly LGBTQ+ Folk Club, we’re bringing the community connection of a traditional folk club into an accessible online setting.
How it works
We’ll run these sessions like a traditional singaround. Everyone has the option to share something with the group — this could be:
- a song (traditional or original)
- a poem
- A tune
- a short piece of writing
To make sure everyone gets a chance to play , we ask that each contribution is no longer than 6 minutes (including introductions).
At the start of the Session, Maddie (or facilitator) will explain some 'house rules' before the music starts.
When it’s your turn to play , you’ll be invited to tell us a bit about yourself and your piece. Everyone else will be muted on Zoom so you can be heard clearly, and afterwards, people will have the chance to give some positive feedback in that chat.
Who can come
This session is for individuals who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIA community, but nobody is going to be asking you to share your identity if you're not comfortable. You are welcome to come with your camera off if you would like.
- You don’t need to know anything about folk or traditional music to join.
- You’re welcome to perform, or just come along to listen and hang out with other LGBTQ+ individuals.
- Everyone from absolute beginners to seasoned professionals are welcome.
About the facilitator
The club is hosted by Maddie Morris (they/them), winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and a touring musician from Leeds. Maddie created this space out of a love for folk clubs, and a hope to make the joy and connection that they associate with going to folk clubs more accsessible to other neurodivergent, disabled and LGBTQ+ individuals.
You can listen to Maddie’s music and find out more about their work here.
