Event description

Description

Essex Road is a street littered with wonderful historical gems, interesting buildings and intriguing stories.

On this almost linear walk you'll be led the full length of the road, from Islington Green up to its junction with Balls Pond Road (just over one mile). Along the way we will stop to look at historical sites and marvel at how this road has changed so much over the centuries.

We'll talk about an innovative market, a early care home and amazing Tudor houses and taverns. We'll visit theatrical housing, a swimming pool, a cloned church and an Egyptian Temple.

It's a mixed bag... but then so is Islington itself. And that's why we love it.

.......................................

It occurs to me that am originally an Essex girl so it's quite fitting I should lead you along a road of this name! And, if you look at a map and draw a line continuing in the direction of the road you'll see it goes through Woodford on the edge of Epping Forest, to Ongar and then on through the major towns of Chelmsford and Colchester before finishing at Harwich, an important Essex port with 17th century dockyards.
