The Opposite of Cheating: Teaching for Integrity in the Age of AI

Join us for a transformative session focused on integrity in education.

We will explore research insights into why students engage in cheating and discuss effective strategies to address these challenges.

Learn how to reduce the influence of peers and instructor effects, enhance intrinsic motivation, and minimise opportunities for dishonesty. Participants will find at least one actionable idea to implement in their own context.

Our goal is to inspire attendees to rethink responses to cheating—before, during, and after it occurs—creating a more honest and supportive academic environment for everyone.

Tricia Bertram Gallant, Ph.D. is the Director of Academic Integrity Office and Triton Testing Center at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), Board Emeritus of the International Center for Academic Integrity, and former lecturer for both UCSD and the University of San Diego. Tricia has authored, co-authored, or edited numerous articles, blogs, guides, book chapters/sections, and books on academic integrity, artificial intelligence, and ethical decision-making. Following her 2022 co-edited book with David Rettinger – Cheating Academic Integrity: Lessons from 30 Years of Research (Jossey-Bass, 2022), Tricia and David’s The Opposite of Cheating: Teaching for Integrity in the Age of AI will be released by the University of Oklahoma Press on 11 March 2025. Tricia regularly consults with and trains faculty, staff and students worldwide on academic integrity, artificial intelligence, and ethical decision-making.

David Rettinger, Ph.D., has taught psychology at the college level for more than 20 years, including at the University of Mary Washington where he holds the title of professor emeritus. He is an expert in students’ academic integrity behavior, having published research in Theory into Practice, Research in Higher Education, Ethics and Behavior, and Psychological Perspectives on Academic Cheating. He is co-editor of Cheating Academic Integrity: 40 Years of Research published by Wiley. His research has demonstrated the importance of students’ attitudes toward school and beliefs about peer behavior in determining whether students will cheat.

Rettinger is president emeritus of the International Center for Academic Integrity (ICAI), an organization founded to combat cheating, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty in higher education. He leads the organization’s efforts in assessment and survey research, continuing the McCabe academic integrity survey.

He has presented on topics relating to pedagogy, policy, and practice in academic integrity around the U.S. and internationally. His collaborations include partnerships in Chile, Mexico, Nigeria, Thailand, Montenegro, and Ukraine, and as a Fulbright Specialist in Nepal. He has appeared in numerous media outlets including the CBS Morning Show, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Inside Higher Education, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
