Event description

Description

Not long to go now! The Town Hall is closing on 14 January for at least five years so don't miss the chance of going on a superbly entertaining and exhilarating tour of Manchester Town Hall led by the effortlessly engaging guides of New Manchester Walks.

This is a tour devised by Ed Glinert, official Manchester tour guide and author of Penguin’s Manchester Compendium, and Glinert knows the building better than anyone, having been associated with the Town Hall as journalist, political agitator, writer and tour guide for more than 30 years.

We have created an original and unusual tour with original research, having found that so many of the stories about the Town Hall being handed down from on high were wrong. We dig and delve deep to discover and uncover every (Gothic) stone. We constantly unearth new things and unusual angles about the building. We do more than just point out the bleedin’ obvious. We reveal, unveil and cross-reference. We talk about the sacrilegious placing of a cotton boll on top of the church-like tower, the masonic symbolism to show the “true time” on the clock, the coup within the Labour Party that abolished the post of Lord Mayor, and unravel the complex story behind how Manchester became the world’s first nuclear-free city. We also go that bit further to explain the famous Ford Madox Brown murals, thanks to Ed Glinert's and John Alker's astonishing research.

Let's put it another way. On our tour you won't hear nonsense like "the three stripes on the council coat of arms denote the three rivers of Manchester". Who makes up such stuff?

On our tour you won't hear nonsense like "the statues of Henry III and Elizabeth on the facade are because they gained Manchester more civc rights." As if good money would be spent on such fripperies!

Yes, this is the de-luxe tour – and here’s a great review.

“Dear Ed,

I just HAD to write to thank you for your wonderful tour of Manchester Town Hall – it was even better than we had hoped! Sue was the best kind of guide – efficient, friendly, approachable – and fun!

We got to know all kinds of information, local and global history, art, politics and all manner of details about the building and the importance of Manchester.

I was so grateful to be able to see this wonderful building and gain so much from our trip – well worth the wait!

All best wishes
