An easy two hour stroll through a part of North Kensington/Notting Hill that was almost completely transformed by 1960s slum clearance.

About this event

We will use old photos of the area, some of which are featured in the book, The Other Side of Notting Hill, to see how it has changed since the post-war period. The area, traditionally known as Kensal Town, also featured in the 1950s photographs of the famous street photographer, Roger Mayne, Alan Johnson's autobiography 'This Boy', and countless films and TV programmes as will be explained on the walk. I'll also talk about how the area was developed from farmland in the nineteenth century and how it was affected by events such as the London blitz, the Notting Hill riots and the murder of Kelso Cochrane.

The walk is £10.00 per person but, if you buy a copy of my book, The Other Side of Notting Hill, on the day, the book will cost £10.00 only (against £16.99 RRP giving you an effective £6.99 back). If you would like to be sure of a copy, please contact me in advance in case I sell out on the day.

The walk is limited to 15 people only for comfort assuming there are no adverse changes to current Covid restrictions. If there is any tightening limiting numbers that can meet below this number, I will run the walk on a first come first served basis and organise a follow up for anyone left behind.
