Event description

This is a time-travelling guided walk taking us back to a time when Holloway was a highly respectable neighbourhood for the upwardly-mobile middle classes – an era when the Nag’s Head shopping area of Holloway was affectionately known as “The Oxford Street Of The North”.

On this walk you will find out how the area evolved from a muddy thoroughfare flanked by farms and pasture land into a go-to shopping district with top-end entertainment.

Imagine looking at beautiful shop displays behind curved glass windows framed with polished brass and hand-painted signage, and being served by courteous staff in imaculate white starched aprons. Imagine also, palatial variety theatres, gin palaces, tea rooms, banqueting halls and the early labyrinthine department stores.

Learn how one much-loved and much-missed department store grew to be one of the best known shops in North London, succeeding into the twentieth century. And find out about its Victorian rival around the corner – a even larger, more impressive and possibly more successful store.

Today's Holloway may not be as visually impressive as it was 125 years ago but it’s still got a plenty to offer – hints of the historical gems are hiding in plain view just waiting to be appreciated.

Don’t just pass through – come and see the district in a different light.

Please note, this walk is meant to last 90 minutes but attendees' questions plus discussions along the way means we sometimes over-run – please allow 2 hours (max).

Jane ParkerMy guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends.
The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.
