Event Details:

Learning can be the most vital, engaging, and enjoyable aspect of our personal and collective experience. Equally, learning can be difficult and a source of much pain and failure. The ability to learn about learning and to harness the learning process, is the key to our ability to survive in a complex and unpredictable world.

This opening statement from the “Declaration on Learning” (see below). It is very easy to agree with yet not so easy to make continuous learning an inherent feature of individual, team and organisational life. Middlesex University has been a pioneer of many learning initiatives – such as the Institute for Work-Based Learning and its D.Prof degrees, where research is combined with everyday work. But many L&D departments invest most of their time designing, commissioning or running courses. The 70:20:10 rule of learning puts 70% firmly in the workplace. In many countries learning still equates with “knowledge”. So this session will bring for discussion some key challenges such as:

  • What are the characteristics of a continuous learning culture?
  • How do we help people to manage their own learning effectively?
  • What constitutes an effective learning programme?
  • When should we utilise team learning rather than individual?
  • How should we deploy professional resources in L&D departments?
  • How do we ensure knowledge is shared across organisational boundaries and what has been learnt is not forgotten?

The session will be facilitated by Professor Andrew Mayo. Andrew spent the greater part of his working life in large international companies, but in 1996 he started his own consultancy company (Mayo Learning International) and began working with university Business Schools. In June 2000, he was part of a group of 12 who published “A Declaration on Learning”, from which some of the statements above come, and a copy of this will be given to all participants in this evening event. Andrew has published several books, including “The Power of Learning” (about the Learning Organisation) and “Creating a Learning and Development Strategy”, which is an established textbook for HRM students. He is the author of many articles on learning, knowledge management, HR Metrics and strategic issues in HRM.
