Event description

Description

This session is open to people who would like to discuss social and health issues affecting the lives of African and African-Caribbean families. The session is followed by a free delicious cultural buffet networking session. The buffet suitable for vegans and vegetarians

We will be joined by a panel of health professionals, community activists and local politicians.

Come and have your say:

Brexit Britain

How can we prevent our communities from being impacted by a potential economic downturn and an increase in racist attacks?

Teen pregnancy

How can we reduce the rate of teen pregnancies in our communities, which is higher than the national average?

Gangs

Is it possible to find community alternatives to a life of crime for our young people or do we have to resign ourselves to the fact that some young people will be lost to a world of crime and ending up being part of the criminal industrial system or dead?

Mental health crisis

Mental illness is the biggest silent crisis facing our communities. One in eight people from an African or African-Caribbean background had contact with mental health services in 2014-15. Clearly living in the UK is making us sick!

What can we do to collectively promote wellbeing and support for our family members facing these issues? Shouldn't we show the NHS a red card for repeatedly letting our families down over the years?

Our Children In Care

More of our children are taken into care than any other ethnic group in the UK. Why?

What is going on in our families that the state has to intervene in this forceful way? What can we do to support families before they come to the attention of the authorities?

Once are children are in the system do we not have a moral duty to come forward and adopt or foster our children or is this not our problem? Over 8,000 foster carers are urgently required. We will have adoption and fostering teams at the event for you to discuss becoming a foster carer or an adopter.

Local NHS Services

African and African-Caribbean communities suffer from many chronic diseases including diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer and obesity. Shouldn’t demand that the NHS and local authorities take our health issues more seriously and rollout campaigns in our communities?

What Say You? Limited Tickets available

Free buffet with a valid ticket

We are planning to prepare enough food for everyone but food provided on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Other Topics

(If time allows)

How to get the right care for elders in our community?

How can we empower ourselves to look after our own health?

Do we need a specialist dating and marriage broker to help single people connect within our communities as singletons are now a growing part of our communities? And single people face a much tougher time in terms of health and wellbeing in the UK.
