Four Nations and an Island: The Pevsner Architectural Guides in the 21st Century

As completion of the revised Buildings of England series draws near, the Victorian Society and Yale University Press are pleased to introduce a series of online talks by authors of recent or imminent volumes from all four of the national series, plus the Isle of Man. The surveys of each county or area have yielded fresh discoveries and revaluations from the Victorian and Edwardian period, highlighting the contributions of local and regional architects and designers as well as well-known national figures.

The English series is represented by Andy Foster (Birmingham and the Black Country), Jane Grenville (Yorkshire North Riding) and Martin Roberts (County Durham). Frank Keohane, author of the most recent Buildings of Ireland volume, introduces the marvels of the city and county of Cork, and Jane Geddes will discuss the revision of Colin McWilliam's account of Lothian (1978), the first instalment of the Buildings of Scotland series. Robert Scourfield reflects on Wales, and Jonathan Kewley gives a foretaste of the forthcoming survey of his native Isle of Man. The talks are introduced by the editors of the Pevsner Architectural Guides, Simon Bradley and Charles O'Brien.
