About the Speakers
1. Author: Dr Gladys Ngetich
Gladys is a Rhodes Scholar and a Schmidt Science Postdoctoral Fellow at Space Enabled Research Group, MIT. Gladys obtained her PhD from the University of Oxford where she researched advanced techniques for cooling jet engines. Before the University of Oxford, she pursued BSc in Mechanical Engineering at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in Kenya.
Gladys has been a recipient of many notable awards and recognitions including the International Astronautical Federation IAF Emerging Space Leader Award, International Gas Turbine Institute Young Engineer Award, UK Rare Rising Star, featured in Nature, and twice in BBC Science News.
To inspire others to unleash their full potential, Gladys has so far published two books;
- The PhD Journey: Strategies for Enrolling, Thriving, and Excelling in a PhD Program
- The Bold Dream: Transcending the Impossible.
2. Moderator: Dr Miriam Kilimo
Miriam Jerotich Kilimo completed her PhD in Anthropology at Emory University. She will begin a postdoctoral fellowship at James Madison University in August 2022. Miriam’s research and teaching interests center on the themes of feminist politics, law, and governance in contemporary Africa. Her research has been published in Africa, Reproductive Health Matters and Anthropology and Humanism. She has also written for The Guardian, Africa Is A Country and Brittle Paper.
Prior to her graduate studies at Emory, Miriam completed a BA in Anthropology at Dartmouth College and a Masters in Women’s Studies from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Alongside her work, Miriam enjoys helping students apply for graduate scholarships and programs abroad. She has advised students through her online educational platform Higher Ed Prep.
