The Place of Jidaigeki
Event Information
About this Event
Jidaigeki (period drama) is a popular genre of film in Japanese cinema. With a relatively loose definition, the blanket term can be applied to any film which is set in the period before the end of 19th century, although it is frequently used to refer to “Samurai” cinema. Often following a narrative of good versus bad, the jidaigeki was much loved at its peak in the mid-1950, when more than 170 films per year were being released.
Now, in the 21st century, this old-fashioned genre still exists and the blueprint of jidaigeki continues to be applied to many contemporary directors’ works. However, is the approach to the period drama by present day creators the same as their predecessors’? How do modern day audiences view the topknot haircut of a Samurai?
In conjunction with the screening of Samurai Shifters as part of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2021 Online Special, the film’s director, INUDO Isshin, will introduce his views on contemporary jidaigeki and his filmmaking process behind this much-loved film. In discussion with Jasper Sharp, a writer and curator specialising in Japanese cinema, he will explore shifts in filmmaking over the years, as well as in the perception of the period drama, both in the Japanese cinema industry and the minds of audiences alike.
There will be a brief introduction on jidaigeki by Jasper Sharp.
