In partnership with Ivy Wild Academy, we invite you to a live panel discussion on The Politics of Black Hair.

In a society governed by Eurocentric visions of beauty, Black hair is never “just hair,” it has become a contested political terrain, where appearance can mean the difference between acceptance and exclusion.

What is framed as grooming or professionalism is in fact a regime of obligation—a demand to tame or disguise our hair in order to be legible, employable, or even safe. Beauty here is not optional; it is a mandate, and the labour demanded of Black bodies is relentless.

This conversation will examine how beauty standards have historically regulated and disciplined Black bodies—shaping not only how we are expected to present ourselves, but how our humanity is recognised or denied.
