Event description
A one-day community conference which supplements the British Textile Biennial in Blackburn, Lancashire.

About this Event

A one-day community conference which supplements the British Textile Biennial in Blackburn, Lancashire https://superslowway.org.uk/projects/britishtextilebiennial-2019-2/. The focus will be to examine who we were (our heritage of mills and warehouses), where we are now (social inclusion and separation), and what we may yet become (re-imagined communities and gentrification).

Confirmed speakers include Dr Stephen Pritchard, an artist and academic who researches and practises activist art projects in community settings in order to create spaces for community empowerment (http://colouringinculture.org/.), and Jamie Holman artist in residence at the British Textile Biennial (https://jamieholman.com/category/about/).

The aim is to capitalise on the unique opportunity that the culturally accessible aspects of the British Textile Biennial, such as the Adidas Spezial Exhibition provide (https://theshuttle.org.uk/adidas-spezial-trainers-exhibition-announced-for-blackburn/), to engage with local communities who would not normally attend academic conferences or engage with education establishments beyond compulsory education.

Where: The conference will be hosted at the University Centre at Blackburn College, University Close, Blackburn, Lancashire, BB2 1LH.

When: Registration will open at 09.30 ready for a 10am start, and will finish at 3pm to allow visiting delegates time to engage with other aspects of the British Textiles Biennial.

Cost: This conference is free of charge and lunch will be provided.
