The Poppy Retake / From Shadows of War and Empire - EXHIBITION PREVIEW
Event Information
Description
World War I’s involvment and impact on European Colonies - an exhibition in two parts:
THE POPPY RETAKE
video art installation by Kooj Chuhan
Will wars ever end? Was World War One’s ‘Lest We Forget’ a deluded slogan by Europeans who endured enormous suffering yet ignored even greater calamities for their colonies? Is war in fact the default future human addiction as global economics, culture and inequality spell more conflict forever? The Poppy Retake raises these questions, combining music and drama within a character-led art installation, an endless loop deconstructing what such wars now mean.
From the Shadows of War and Empire
documentary exhibition by Southern Voices
During WWI European powers brought their colonies into the war, took resources from these countries (people, materials and finance) and took the war to ‘fronts’ outside Europe – this fact is more or less ignored. We examine the impact of 1914-18 on certain colonised countries from the viewpoint of the colonised peoples themselves. We focus on India, West Indies, German and British East Africa, and Nigeria, their situation as colonies, the impact of the war on them and on anti-colonial struggles.
