About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Hiking

We will explore one of the most striking and enigmatic aspects of Scotland’s recent glacial past. As recently as 12,000 years ago the Great Glen was home to a glacier which flowed out from the Western Highlands and down to the sea at Inverness. On these short walks we will see how the ice from this most recent glaciation blocked the deep valleys cut during previous more extreme glacial periods to make extensive dammed lakes, and discover what happens when the glacial ice dams failed.

We will see the parallel roads which had Darwin stumped and see how their explanation was in many ways the birth of climate science.
